Our planet faces an environmental challenge on an unprecedented scale. Habitat destruction is leading directly to an alarming loss of species.
Never has the need for effective conservation leadership been so great
As individuals we can only do so much to stem the tide, but as Greta Thunberg has proved, when leaders stand up for what they believe in and find their voice they can engage those around them. In time they can even influence wider change - inside-out leadership brought to life
I am proud to be the inaugural Chair of the Osprey Leadership Foundation, a charity created by entrepreneur Dr Tim Mackrill, which exists to inspire and enable tomorrow’s conservation leaders in the UK and Africa
Inspired by the migratory path of the Osprey, of which Tim is an internationally renowned expert, the charity focuses on education programmes in schools, supporting young leaders in their first conservation roles, funding university bursaries and running a Stars of the Future scheme with personalised support opportunities
Last year we launched the Osprey Leadership Academy, designed to equip future conservation leaders with the knowledge skills and confidence to make a real difference to the world around them.
The Academy runs Becoming a Conservation Leader, a free of charge 12 weeks inter-active on line programme. So far sixty young leaders have completed the programme
Following this we invite individuals to join an Evolving Conservation Leaders group, a cohort of talented young conservationists. Our commitment is to support members over a sustained period of time as they develop their careers. Activity includes a discussion forum, mentoring, encouraging the building of alliances, volunteer opportunities in the UK and abroad and a future programme of development workshops focused on both leadership and conservation.
